Upon opening, this matcha has a sweet vegetal scent partnered with a bright green color. What I find striking is how easily this matcha froths up, delivering a smooth and creamy mouthfeel. It offers pleasant vegetal notes at first sip that were balanced with sweetness. Also features a medium umami note that integrates well with the rest. To my surprise, the umami notes stole the spotlight, becoming the most prominent note. In this form, I can also taste nutty undertones that were not discernible in usucha. There’s a hint of bitterness and minimal astringency near the end, then concludes with a lingering vegetal note. The overall profile meshes in a way that is particularly enjoyable to my palate. Hikari no Michi distinctly reminds me of Marukyu Koyamaen’s Yugen blend, albeit creamier and with a stronger umami flavor. Overall, the blend provided unexpected complexity and I would recommend it to matcharistas who love a matcha that has a little more depth.
